Got The Cover Of Air & Space Magazine!
So excited to be able to share this news. Three of my photos will be in the November issue of Smithsonian Air & Space Magazine, and one of them is the cover photo.
Lancaster County Airport (right around the corner from my house) has an air show called Community Days, every other summer. In 2015, a pilot named Randy Ball was there with his MiG-17.
My friend, Dan Myers, also a photographer, runs the control tower there, so he and I always have the run of the airport for the Friday practice day and both Saturday and Sunday. Nice to be able to be guaranteed a spot by the Air Boss at show center!
Anyway, he and I got a bunch of nice MiG-17 shots back then. Fast forward to a couple months ago, when he noticed on Randy Ball's Facebook page a request asking people to upload any nice photos of his plane to a link he provided, as Air & Space Magazine was going to be doing a feature on the MiG. Maybe people could get their photos in a major publication. Dan uploaded a few photos, then emailed me about it, knowing I got some nice shots as well, so I uploaded four photos.
A few weeks ago I was contacted by the Art Editor for Air & Space, telling me three of my photos are in the article and that I had gotten the cover. Woot!
So, anyway, here they are. This is the mockup of the article and cover that the art editor sent me of the November issue. And as a bonus, my buddy Dan got the two page spread in the feature; that's his photo going across the airfiledwith the shadow of the plane on the runway (he was perched atop the rotating beacon!).
Yes, we got paid. This wasn't someone asking for photos in return for "exposure".
Enjoy!

Adult Male Brown Bear Fishing in Katmai
Coastal brown bears each have their own style of fishing. This particular large male stood up and walked upright in the water in order to get a better view then lunged after the fish. It worked for him pretty well. He has an odd look with all of his fur shed down to summer length except for the back of his head/neck.
All shot on a rainy day with Nikon D850/200-500mm f5.6 handheld. Rain gear on both photographer and equipment were thoroughly soaked through by the end of the day. Images are posted to fit the narrative and not necessarily in the same order that they were shot.
1) Here he is walking up at the bank of the creek to his favorite fishing spot. 500mm, 1/800s, f5.6, ISO500
2) His uncommon style of fishing, more specifically how he spots fish. Check out the muscles in his "arms". 500mm, 1/800s, f5.6, ISO900
3) Going for it. 210mm, 1/800s, f8, ISO1000
4) Score. 480mm, 1/640s, f5.6, ISO320
5) Some bears eat the fish right there in the water. This guy preferred to take it onto the bank. He has a chum salmon also known as a dog salmon because the natives dry them to feed sled dogs over the winter. 360mm, 1/640s, f5.6, ISO1400
6) And a portrait opportunity albeit not of the most photogenic bear, what with the hair style. 370mm, 1/800s, f5.6, ISO2000
7) And an action portrait. Unfortunately I clipped his hump. I've never been much good at zooming during action and it is even more difficult with the 200-500mm. 410mm, 1/800s, f8, ISO1400
