D800/Nikon 70-200 f/2.8, hand held, Oceanside, Ca. We we're expecting an El Nino weather system this winter, but the high surf was about all that Southern California received. I always use spot metering when shooting this type of action.

Here's another image using a Nikon 2x converter. I find using a shutter speed of 1/1000 suits this type of sports photography, and I can still "hold" the camera (D 800). I've tried using a tripod but wasn't happy with the results, mainly because I find it too restricting. Using a 2x converter instead of a heavier lens like a 400mm, reduces weight and makes hand holding much easier.

Nice, I've had mainly good results with the 70-200 TC20III combo.

Testing out my "new to me" D500 and 70-200 VR II, which was purchased to shoot motorsports, by shooting portraits of course!
