Nice timing for the shot! But I think the real culprit is not the horse or rider but the logo on top of the barrel being offset has caused it to not be balanced.

Thanks, James...could be! Figured it'd show how just much the barrel had moved by rotating it that way. Hey, I tried.

D800/Nikon 70-200 f/2.8, hand held, Oceanside, Ca. We we're expecting an El Nino weather system this winter, but the high surf was about all that Southern California received. I always use spot metering when shooting this type of action.

Thank you! I wasn't on the pier for that shot, but I was using a Nikon 2x teleconverter,

Here's another image using a Nikon 2x converter. I find using a shutter speed of 1/1000 suits this type of sports photography, and I can still "hold" the camera (D 800). I've tried using a tripod but wasn't happy with the results, mainly because I find it too restricting. Using a 2x converter instead of a heavier lens like a 400mm, reduces weight and makes hand holding much easier.
