Showcase Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8

Quick question, has anyone tried the older Sigma 1.4 TC with the 120-300 Sport? I was thinking of just getting the old one since I don't see myself using it much. I read on DPReview that even after updating the Sigma 120-300 Sport with the new firmware, the old one still works fine. Can someone confirm this?

Yes, it does work. It even works with the old 2x converter and it also works with both converters stacked. D4s reports the f stop correctly with stacked converters but D810 doesn't. Not sure about the other bodies.

Did you updated the 120-300 S firmware and then try it with the old one? I think I updated mine, but I have to check.

yes things were fine after the firmware update. And I made a few changes to the custom settings as well.

I've also used the previous 1.4x on it - no worries.

Just tested my 120-300 S with an older Sigma 1.4 DG TC and wow, results are excellent! Wide open, I don't see any loss of sharpness at all while using my D800. Focus is accurate and fast. I really don't see any reason to shell out the extra money for the new one unless you need the adjustment settings via the dock. I got mine minty off the Cafe (thanks photolizard), and they can easily be found in the $100 range!

I've loved using the D750 with this lens this ringette season. The season comes to a close this weekend with my daughter heading to the provincial playoffs. Unfortunately, they are held in a rink with netting all around, with filthy glass and a really short player bench. So, I'll just be a fan in the stands - too frustrating otherwise.

great shot although I'd crop out the outfielder

also notice the BG difference between 2.8 and 5.6, I personally don't like to see those faces behind home plate
